Drum Set Crows Nest

The base for our  Drum Set Crow's Nest has begun.  In a month's time, it will be installed.  You can follow this blog and also the www.yurtcity.blogspot.com postings for updates about this piece, which is part of the 10th anniversary exhibition of The Farm Project in Garrison NY.  It opens on September 5th, 2015.  Details to come.

I have been quietly working over the past few years in the studio on paintings and for the past few years on ceramic sculpture and mostly one of a kind, limited production studio pottery. During this time of intense studio production, have let this blog run fallow.  I am back in action in more ways than one.  I will be posting regular postings on this site and in late August, fellow Canadian and 10 year strong now Yurt City, collaborating partner, Laura Ten Eyck and I will be installing Drum Set Crows Nest in Garrison New York as part of The Farm Project at Saunder's Farm coordinated by Collaborative Concepts. Our structure will be installed high on the hills of the Hudson highlands on a real cow farm with opening events on Labour Day weekend, a mid run event on October 3rd, 2015 and a closing event on November 1st.  Below are two images of Cow Semaphore a project we installed at Saunder's Farm in 2012. It withstood Hurricane Sandy.

Here are a few preliminary drawings of Drum Set Crows Nest that were rejected.  One was a bit too much like a Life Guard Station.  The other was too tall for safety and liability concerns.

Stay tuned to see how the final installed version turns out. Over the summer we will post some sneak peaks of the work in progress.  We begin installing in mid August 2015. You can be a part of this project by sponsoring us through the purchase of small and medium hand thrown food safe bowls or small unique one of a kind small paintings. The funds from your purchase will be used to help us build make this large scale sculpture.  See the link just following this paragraph, which is a link to pay pal to complete the purchase.  Purchase price also included shipping and handling. You can let me know in a note during the paypal transaction if you have a colour preference. The Bowls run the gamut of the rainbow!  Other larger pieces will be available shortly for sale on my website at www.sheilaross.com   If paypal is not your thing, I also have a square and can take credit cards or email me and we can work out another way for payment.

It has been quite some since I have posted on this blog.  I have been busy this past year or so with working on 3 collaborative projects with Laura Ten Eyck, my Yurt City collaborator.  In 2012 we installed 2 outdoor sculptural projects on the New Jersey shore and in the Hudson Highlands near Garrison, NY. We are preparing an installation for Memphis.  More info can be viewed at www.yurtcity.blogspot.com.  In my own studio practice, I have been making some paintings and in the past year, I have resumed working in clay.  Some photos are below.  You can also purchase some bowls by scrolling down to the link below and paying with paypal.

North Side Open Studio Event

Before the Studio was cleaned up....

And After. Kathryn Kerr, my studio mate and I decided to participate in the Jun 18th and 19th, 2011 event. Turn out was not as strong as the October event, it was still worth while to show some new works on paper and panel.

The Trip to Istanbul has been postponed

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the curators of the 4th installment of the Kuf/Mold exhibition, the project has been delayed until next September 2011. As in 2007, it will coincide with the Istanbul Biennial. There is some talk that the project might be included in the Biennial itself, which would be very exciting. I still plan on participating, which has been aided by the support of all those who supported my Open Studio event of the past summer. I will keep you posted on updates and developments of this project.

Open Studio Event

Here are some photos of the Open Studio event held on Saturday, July 24th, 2010. In spite of the heat, we were pleased that many people braved the heat. Big thanks for coming out everyone!
